Subject: [CR]Thoughts on Dave Staub's passing

Brian's note was very moving and hit me hard. Then, looking at the photo Jamie Swan posted, an episode came back.

Dave Staub and I had swapped a couple of emails on Paramount minutiae, as passionate folk will, and he had been a great correspondent. So, I was really pleased to meet him at Cirque. In the first few minutes of chatting, it came out that Cirque had gotten Dave to come, but none of his bikes made the trip. So, he rode my Medici for the weekend, and genuinely seemed to like it.

I'd brought the bike to sell, because it's small for me and large for Beloved Spouse. I figured that more people would notice it being ridden by Dave than being stored in the van...

But then Dave talked with Brian Bayliss, and showed him the bike. Brian said he remembered working on that frameset during the time he worked at Medici. Between that and the fact that I have no better-made bike, I suddenly changed my mind and decided to keep it. It is gorgeous, particularly the treatment of the rear dropouts. Now, it will remind me of more good memories and good people; there's a deeper personal connection with two people I really admire.
