How reasonable is that price for the earlier retrofriction? Really, is that reasonable? Perhaps, as I've been sometimes told, I'm just plain unreasonable. >>

Those shifters were the earlier version, and I suppose, more "valuable" than the later shifters with the cutouts. I have seen the later versions go as high as $80 or so, and as all things, just depends on who wants what, when......
