In regard to S-A hubs: I thought the two spacers were the same thickness and it was up to installer to juggle position of cog and spacers for best chainline. (but you have to use both spacers or cog will be loose) I have an AW with splined cog and snap ring, maybe other hubs had different requirements? My 77 Raleigh SuperCourse came with an Atom hub and Suntour freewheel with a spacer between the two. (looks like an S-A spacer) In fact it seems that the spacer is necessary to keep moving part of freewheel body off the hub. I think this a function of this hub and freewheel combo.
