Well, I finally am moved in enough to start tinkering with bikes in my new home town of Salt Lake City Utah. I was wondering if anyone had a shop recommendation where I might be able to find the small odd bit that I need (like a campy 5speed axle)? Also, if there are any other vintage bike riders out here, would be nice to get together for a ride.
For those of you that don't live here, I'll give a short report. The bottom line is that I am really pleased with the road rides I have been able to do. In a dozen rides, not a single car has honked at me, cut me off, thrown something at me, which was a daily event in Rhode Island and Texas. True, the roads I have taken have been very bike friendly, but I think that there is a true outdoors spirit here that results in a degree of tolerance on the roads.
All my rides have been on the various canyons that are easy to access from down town. about 2 miles from my house is City Creek Canyon that will take me to about 6,500 feet (2,000 foot climb). Nice thing there is that it is open to bikes only every other day. No cars! About 4 miles away (sometimes ride, sometimes drive) is Emigration Canyon. A less steep road, with marked bike lane about 75% of the time. Real nice smooth twisty road that also goes to about 6,500 feet. I am told it gets much nicer if you continue, maybe when I get my next classic up and running. And the last canyon I tried was Mill creek Canyon. It has a park along it so it was a bit busy. And it got rather steep. I hear the mnt biking (or I should say vintage cyclocross) at the top is great. And there are a few more canyons to explore. Best thing about riding a classic bike around here is it gives you an excuse to be slow on the long climbs!
Anyway, Just sending out a feeler to see if there are any SLC folks on the list. And I will be posting a number of questions about an Raleigh International I am trying to get up and running.
