SV980 has a much finer grain structure, so theoretically is somewhat superior to 531. It was never readily available in all the variations of gauge and taper that Reynolds and Columbus supplied. While grain is nice, it doesn't trump configuration when choosing forks, stays and other tubes for a truly custom frame. Eisentraut almost always mixed tubes from different sets to get
what he wanted.
