I just finished reading Sheldon Browns idea for adjusting bearing cones
on Q.R. axles. Very clever tool idea. Decades ago I was taught that
the axles should be just a bit shorter than the dropout spacing so that
the Q.R. lever DIDN'T contact the axle when closed, thus not compressing
the axle, thus not needing to compensate in your adjustment. Or does
the axle still compress as a result of dropout pressure against the
cones? Someone care to illuminate me? Never thought much about this
all these years.
