The left side drive does not in fact drive you off the road, but rather prevents you from getting proper traction on highly cambered roads. It also makes left turns more difficult to handle quickly, which means that you are somewhat more exposed in cross-traffic turns. It is my experience that on a flat road, either a left or a right hand drive ttrike will be faster than one with a differential.

As for Charlie's original question to the ideal frame height, my preference is to have a frame size that is about 2 cm smaller with plenty of seatpost exposed. This allows you to hang way out on corners.
