Jim, only the top tube on the Merckx MX Leader is oriented different than Columbus intended. The down tube is as you describe with the oval cross section horizontal at the BB and vertical at the head tube. And since that top tube is a smaller diameter, it works out great visually, with the front of the tube (oval cross section) horizontal and the back of the tube (oval cross section) vertical.
