A lot of people have been asking me personally about British tricycle and axle makers as fitted to lightweight trikes. This is not a definitive list and not necessary in chronological order. I. Abingdon famous for their differential axle. 2. Lipscomb of Sunbury on Thames on Thames. Tricycles and axle maker. 3. Kendrick maker of "K" type. Two wheels in front as copied by modern day Newton. 4. Higgins trike and axle maker. In either diff or OWD. The diff type is rumoured amongst club men to have come from a tank gun or sight and modified by him. Also made "K" type and a axle with a Sturmey hub gear. 5. Holdsworth trike and axle maker. OWD axle supplied to numerous makers. There is even a Paris Galibier trike about with one of these axles. 6. Harding trike and axle maker. 7. Frank Whitt axle designer and part maker. Frank was a stalwart of the S.V.C.C. Southern Veteran Cycle Club. He designed, modified and adapted a Holdsworth axle. This has the hubs brazed or welded onto the axles coupled with self centring outside ball races. F.W.Evans used his axles and Tom Board built one of them into a tandem trike that I owned. I believe there were no more than five of these axles made. 8. Ken Rogers trike and axle maker basically a Higgins axle. Carried the torch after Higgins closed. OWD and Rogers twin wheel roller drive. Supplied lots of frame builders with axles. 9. Thompson trike and OWD axle maker. 10. Swallow trike and OWD axle maker. 11. George Longstaff trike and axle maker. Both OWD and two wheel drive. Finally I have a design and a drawing for a two wheeled trike axle but I never had the money or engineering expertise to get it made up.
