Hey Tom ,

Perfect !!

A few years ago , I had the opportunity to spend a couple of very brief days , driving a rented car around on the southern tip of Ireland .

One of the afternoons was spent driving around and around , on the smallest of back roads , searching for Tintern Abbey ( we did eventually find it by the way , the Irish one , not the Welsh one ) .

Perhaps the scene I remember best :

We'd passed a wee tiny church , where a wedding or perhaps a christening was being held . I noticed a vintage , Raleigh DL-1 "Tourist" , with 28-inch tyres , and full-coverage chain-case , in its original old black paint , outside , leaning against the white-washed wall of the tiny old church .

Then , not too much later , in crisscrossing the area , we saw a fairly elderly gentleman , who was dressed in his very best clothes and riding that very same bicycle . His suit was in fine shape , but somehow I knew it had been with him for many years . His suit , and his shoes , were properly and decently black , of course . He looked the very picture of dignity , gently and comfortably riding his black roadster .

Finally , as we combed the countryside in our search for the old abbey , we passed the gentleman again , where he had stopped , after leaving all of the others behind at the church .

His wonderful and tall old black bicycle was leaning against the gate-post of a small cemetery . He'd stepped inside the cemetery to pay his respects at the grave of a loved one . I imagined him telling his dear wife about who it might have been at the wedding , or the christening .

And for a moment , I thought I might be inside a Patterson print . . .

Ahhhhh well , now where did I lay my bent-double GBD , and the pouch of burley light ?
