I understand that tire scrapers often can reduce thorn punctures by scraping the thorn off before it can penetrate. It seems that it's the second rotation that drives the thorn into the tire. There was an article in the Rivendell reader about making scrapers from leather boot laces to foil goats head thorns. This might help if you can't find the old wire versions. Good luck.
