Sounds like a cool tool! FWIW, here's a tip that always worked for me (and you've probably already heard about it... but just in case, here goes)

Put the binder bolt in backwards (thru the threaded portion) and put a dime in the slot. Tighten the bolt against the dime to spread the bars. It works slowly and gently and doesn't scratch anything (unlike prying tools, nothing can slip, and you don't need a free hand to remove the bars).
