Fred,
The Bennoto tape that I like is the rather shinny plastic tape from Mexico in about 100 decorator colors, early 80's?

I think it all depends on which brand you typically used in
your youth. For example Tressoplast and Tressostar are not
identical - they differ in weave, thickness, width (slightly)
and flexibility. The Italian stuff (is it all really the
Bonnoto tape that Peter mentions?) is more flexible than either
of the French tapes. Cat Eye is wider, more flexible and has a
very loose weave. I haven't used the more expensive Japanese
tape in something like 20 years so I just don't recall what
it's like.
A couple of years ago, I inspected the weave of these tapes
with a jeweler's loupe and sent an email about it. Absolutely
no one was interested at the time. What's happened lately to
spark the interest in cloth tape? Anyway, I'll try to dig it
up again.
