Good thoughts. No matter who hosts, a strong database back end to store / catalog / serve up the mass of images is a critical decision. Hosting services have specific databases they support, so thats a big factor to consider when thinking about a hosting service.
Automatically creating and saving a jpeg thumbnail image when a photo is uploaded is important. I've seen some systems that do NOT do this thumbnail genration, and rather rely on the cpu of the server generating the thumb _each_ time an index page is requested. Very bad performance on a busy site results.
How many images do you think such a repository would grow to include ??
