Subject: [CR]SR Shift Levers--Help for the Mechanically Challenged

Hi CR Folks:

I hope someone out there in this great group can help me with a Campy SR mechanical question. I have what I believe to be a complete, NOS set of SR braze-on DT shift levers. These appear to be comparatively early, as they say "Pat." instead of "Brev." They also have something I've never seen before, which is that each silver piece that presses first on to the shifter boss (i.e., the one that is the first on the boss and provides the forward-most stoppiing place for the lever) has an eyelet through which, I presume, each shifter cable is to be threaded on its way down the downtube.

I'm installing these on a late 80's Chris Kvale. Here's my question: I can't figure out how or if I need to use one of the washer/spacer pieces that came with the levers. The levers came with the following: (1) the silver piece referenced above, with a square hole, which I believe goes on the boss first; (2) a relatively thick circular washer with a round hole, which I assume goes on the boss second (and fits on the circular part of the boss); (3) the lever itself, which seems to fit nicely on top of the washer described in (2); (3) a thick silver piece that is flat on one side and says "Pat. Campagnolo" on the flat side, is beveled on the other side, and has a rectangular hole matching the rectangular part of the shifter boss; (4) the threaded piece, with the D-ring, which screws into the boss and holds the whole assembly together; and (5) a very thin washer with a rectangular hole.

My problem is that I can't seem to use the thin washer described in no. (5) above. The shifters seem to install fine without it, in the order given in (1) through (4) above. But even if I wanted to use it, I can't see how it would fit in given that it has a rectangular hole (i.e., must go on after the lever?) and that it doesn't seem to fit between the lever and the beveled "Patent Campagnolo" piece, which seems to belong directly within the concave portion of the lever body.

Sorry for the longest post ever on the shortest technical issue ever, but I'd appreciate your advice. Directions to an exploded-view diagram would be great as well. Thanks in advance!
