There are two versions of the Death Fork.
The original fork is unreinforced at the steerer.
Later Yamaha USA added a steel reinforcement up the center of the steerer. Neither fork is to be trusted.
Note that Yamaha USA was the US marketer of Yamaha, not the parent corporation.
