Subject: [CR]large flange vs. low flange - Never L.F.

The odd thing is , I've been meaning to ask about this for the past week or two . Then today , I wrote an off-list message to a list-member , because I honestly didn't understand what "L.F." meant . Large Flange ? Or Low Flange ?

Then minutes later , this whole thread got started .

Perhaps around 1978 or some such time , I read a magazine article about this very same confusion . The article made sense to me . Ever since then , I have tried never to use the terms :

Large Flange Low Flange L. F.

I avoid all three of those terms . They are just too confusing .

And if I understood the Italian message , in Italia the hub sizes are "normal" and "grand" ?? I'm fairly sure I've seen "Flange Piccole" from that "C." company . ( In English would that be Flange Picayune ?? I've always wanted to start a small cycling newsletter under that banner , The Flange Picayune . But then we quickly get into the difference between bi-monthly and semi-monthly . And that whole thing is a highly in-flammable subject ! :^)

I think , in English , the little ones are "Small Flange" .

There is the occasional "Medium Flange" , uncommon .

And the rest are big-tall-high . But really , "High Flange" is probably the most commonly used term for the big ones .

If you use the terms , small flange , and high flange , there is no confusion . And if you write the abbreviations S.F & H.F. , everyone understands perfectly .

Unless they think you are talking about the "Bay Area" of California .

Hi Chuck,
I was a full time wheel builder for 13 years. In our shop it didn't take too long before we banned the use of L.F. hubs... no matter what size the flanges were. Regards, Jamie Swan

Campagnolo uses the terms Large and Small Flange. Some people use the terms High and Low Flange.

Abbreviated, the first is: LF and SF. And the second would be: HF and LF.

Does everyone see the conflict and confusion the wrong terms generate?
