If you check the archives, about two months ago I posed a similar question to the list. I received a few replies but none of the suggestions worked out. However, I did discover on my own a source for the original Stronglight consumer crank puller. Cyclart had them, NOS, for about $25 plus shipping. Their home page is http://www.cyclart.com/ and, unless I got the last one, you can find these tools in their CyclMarket. Cyclart has lots of other interesting new and used vintage items listed - list members should check them out. I've made a few purchases from them over the years; you'll pay retail prices but this is sometimes cheaper than eBay!

I should also mention that about two weeks ago I managed to pick up the VAR version of this tool. I like using high quality tools and thought This would be a nice addition to the tool kit. Unfortunately it doesn't work; it's too tight a fit and I can't get it started in any of the Stronglight cranks I own. There's no obvious damage to the threads and the measurements pitch and diameter) are right but the threads aren't tapered as much as I think they should be to help get things started; I suspect that it would work if I ground down the first couple of threads a bit. The cheaper Stronglight tool works like a charm.
