The question of cranks. May I join in the fray by following on from members recent comments. Whilst I fully endorse the opinions on the maker Williams, which not unlike the recent hub debate, their were many others equally as good. Which brings me to one of my favourite crank sets called Scandia. This continental three arm patterned 6.3/4" fluted steel crank set was imported and sold by Brown Brothers which I consider matches the top of the range Williams of the time. Its design like the early Chater Lea set has the back of driving crank threaded to act as one of the chain wheel fixings thus leaving two arms to take the other bolts. Other cranks of quality I call to mind are the five pin BSA steel fluted cranks sets. These conveniently take TA rings although they once had their own brand of chainrings and fortunate to still have one of their original double steel chain ring set. Granby was another well known manufacturer with three arm steel cranks and alloy rings.Nicklin and Brampton where also available all very nice to own and still display on our classics! That just about covers the rounds no doubt this interesting thread will go on.
