Thanks to many list members for info on George Omelenchuk, and for Sam Fitzsimmon's new phone number. The frame is more likely from 50s or 60s, also the seat stay tubes are not open on the bottom. Here's what I learned so far...

from Ken Denny--- George Omelenchuk (pronounced omel EN chuk) was a Ukrainian-born machinist a cycle builder who worked predominately from the mid 50's through his death in the 70's. His work is very special to me - he attended school with my dad in Dearborn. I own one of his cycles that he built for post war 6-day racing. He built everything for his cycles - turned hubs on lathe, headset assemblies, and even had a full production extrusion setup for producing rims - many of these, such as mine. were radically drilled between the spoke holes for lightness. The Omel. hubs on my bike are 120mm in diameter!! Georges wife, Jeanne, was a three-time Olympic speedskater, and a cycling champion in her own right.

from Mary Bailey, The Detroit News (found by Pete Rutledge)--- at http://www.detnews.com/history/omelen/omelen.htm (with photo captioned "George Omelenchuk checks out his wife's bicycle prior to an event in 1954.") Speedskater Jeanne Omelenchuk ...eventually married her trainer and coach, George Omelenchuk. George, a watchmaker and later owner of a sporting goods store, also was a speed skater and cyclist. He competed in both sports for 15 years, qualifying for the 1947 Olympic trials in speed skating and racking up numerous titles. He gave up competing in 1957 to help his wife win, coaching her to berths on the U.S. Olympic speed skating team three times. He kept her skates sharpened, kept track of how she was doing on each lap of a race and tipped her off on ice conditions as well as opponents. The Omelenchucks are the only husband and wife team in the Michigan Amateur Athletic Hall of Fame. She was inducted in 1981, he in 1983. In 1993 she was inducted into the Michigan's Women's Hall of Fame.... Omelenchuk served on the Warren City Council in 1987 and stepped down in November 1997. Her husband, George, died in 1994.

from Michigan Supreme Court, Estate of George Omelenchuk, Plaintiffs-Appellees, vs The City of Warren, and the Warren Fire Department, Defendants-Appellants.--- BACKGROUND: On February 13, 1994, a man named George Omelenchuk suffered a heart attack at work. The person who found him lying on the floor called the Warren Fire Department, which sent two trucks. Emergency personnel at the scene included two firefighters, three paramedics, and an emergency medical technician. Resuscitation efforts included insertion of an endotracheal tube. The defendants say that all three paramedics checked to make sure the tube was properly placed. However, when Mr. Omelenchuk arrived at the hospital, the tube was found to be in his esophagus, rather than his trachea. Mr. Omelenchuk was transported to a hospital that was located across the street from his place of business. In the emergency room, further efforts were made to save his life. However, these were unsuccessful, and he was declared dead. BEFORE THE ENTIRE BENCH, Cavanagh, J: Plaintiffs allege that their decedent died as the result of gross negligence by employees of defendant, the city of Warren. The circuit court granted summary disposition disposition on the basis of governmental immunity. The Court of Appeals reversed, but this Court reinstates the judgment of the circuit court because the controlling statutes plainly provide immunity to defendant, the city of Warren.
