I've been riding that hill with the L.A. Wheelmen since the 70's and have been announcing the ride for the past 15 years or so. I have been up the hill on a variety of bikes with gears as high as 42-24 (my '77 Motobecane). The last few years, I've used a modern road bike with a 39-27. Many people use mountain bikes.

This year, Huell Howser did a show about the ride for his California's Gold show. I have just learned that he may be back next year.

I will most likely ride my 1960 Ives in '04. This bike formerly belonged to Hal Munn, who some of you may know, was the president of the Wheelmen for many years, and is a great guy. At about 25 lbs. with a leather saddle, the Ives is NOT a light bike, but I think it will get me up Fargo St. It's got plenty of low gears, but I prefer not to use one that's too low.

I, for one, would love to see a contingent of CR era bikes at the hill next year, and Matt's enticement will make things sweeter.

The Fargo Street ride is held each March. Look at the Wheelmen site (lawheelmen.org) in the next month or so for next year's date.
