You had it basically right but don't do it!

In the 1980s, there was a huge lemming-to-the-sea rush to make everything "aero" especially trying to convert already in production components to be "aero" Most if not all of it didn't work worth a poop.

Maybe some CR folks will recall the allegedly Eddy Merckx trick of installing a little roller inside the NR/SR brake lever so the cable could start up in a normal fashion, then wrap around this pulley and thereby change direction to go down & out in an Aero fashion... a few weeks or months of that small pulley working on the braided steel cable resulted in fraying & failing cables...disastrous & dumb!
