I have long been a fan of that Mavic derailleur, but have never attempted to adjust the pulley cage. Just never really needed to, I guess. I really like the minimalist, industrial look of it and it's companion front derailleur. Also quite light compared to it's competition of the day. Mated with the Simplex Retro-friction shifters, this was, IMHO, one of the coolest of the last generation of friction shifting components. I believe these components overlapped the introduction of the "star-fish" crankset, just prior to Mavic's indexing rear derailleur. My recollection is that the derailleurs were designated with a three-digit number as model number, at least after the demise of the SSC "group". 971 or something similar? Does anyone know the proper model coding for these? I have my Trek 770 set up with these derailleurs, the Simplex shifters, the "star-fish" crank, and Mavic RD500 cartridge bearing hubs laced to Open4CD rims. A really sweet set-up!

Interesting point about the lack of thread lubrication with all things French. With the Mavic rear derailleur

the pulley cage can be raised or lowered to be as close to the large cog as possible for improved shifting performance. Kewl feature (along with how everything is held together with micro circlips).

The only problem is that the factory really torque'd on the lower pivot bolt (with no anti-seize compound on the threads) with the result being that when you go to undo the pivot bolt to adjust the pulley cage height the result can be snapping of the "hat" shaped threaded piece on the inside of the pulley cage. And good luck finding a replacement part now!<<<<<<
