The Mavic RD, used with corncob freewheels (for example 13-14-15-16-17-18) and with the cage height set up properly, made for what I still think to be the very best friction shifter combination ever made. I have never been a great fan of the retro-friction shift levers however, as they had too small a barrel for my liking, requiring too much movement of the lever to effect a shift.
