Here is a fun cycling sport that somehow just popped into my head after not
thinking about it for some 20 years. When I visited Alf Hetchins shop at
Southend-on-Sea in 1982 he had some Speedway bikes there and I found out all about
it. Apparently it started in England about 1946 in conjunction with motorized
Speedway races. Closest thing we have is the Little Indy (like in the movie
Breaking Away) although I just discovered there is one club here that competes
internationally, in Edenton (NC?) . Speedway racing uses no brakes, toe
clips, or any other accessories that might get in the way or be an advantage.
Single speed bikes on a short dirt oval track in a 4-lap race. Sounds pretty
wild doesn't it?
If you've never heard about it, read about it here.
