Fred,

I believe the answer to why Hetchins introducrd the Hellenic stay design is "because". They just did. Why not? And so on. I don't think there was a reason beyond because most people were not doing it.

Can someone even explain to me why Hetchins' became enamored with the Hellenic stays? After all, they seem to serve the opposite purpose of the "vibrant" stays that were also a design element favored by Hetchins.
