Though the French/Belgian/French Canadian makers of _The Triplets of Belleville/Belleville Rendezvous_ poke a thumb in the eye of Americans by portraying us as fat and sloven hamburger lovers, even having an obese Statue of Liberty in the harbor, they equally poke fun at themselves with their obsessive love of frogs legs. (Tadpole popcorn and frogcicles, etc) The cyclists, Champion and his two kidnapped TdF cohorts, come across as mindless passive victims, accepting of their fate without question, unable to extract themselves from their predicament without the aid of a clubfooted mother and the elderly female triplets. Not really a positive portrayal of cyclists, in my opinion. Still, I enjoyed the film. Look for it to receive a well deserved Academy Award nomination for best animated film. If you love the images of the 50s Tour de France you have to see this movie! And the part where the protagonist, Champion Souza, returns home after doing some hill training prior to entering the Tour will have you actually laughing out loud!
Champion headed for the broom wagon:

Don't miss this one!
