I am sure that this has been dealt with recently, but my holiday reading of Tim Krabbe's "The Rider" (1978) prompts my writing to the list. This book is a ride in itself as Tim's autobiographical piece goes through the transcendent illuminatory surreality of competitive cycling. Way too much blood to the brain, or too little! His effusive words describe the effort and insanity of the hours spent racing the Tour du Mt Aigoual. The characters are well drawn and the piece is full of historical reference; the rhythm and pace of the writing is full of the madness and delirium of the ride itself. My muscles were twitching in the easy chair rider position up to the point where the application of Anquetil muscle relaxant was necessary.

All the best for the hols
