I have one of the Williams splined alloy cranksets that you mention. Unfortunately one race of the spindle is severely galled. The spider on mine takes the TA super criterium chainrings. You'll appreciate this , Hugh, yesterday I bought new in the box a Campy NR shortreach pre-cpsc breakeset, a NR 170mm crankset with english BB, a NR r.changer, a new Gran Sport rear changer from about 1960, A Duraace Crane GS (1974) in the original box, a new Stronglight 93 crankset and a TA Criterium in the original box w/ BB. The seller got these parts free from a friend who worked in a bike shop in the early 70's and these hanging around...I'm glad he never looked at Ebay. Now, What to put them on?????
