A lot depends upon the condition of the bicycle. If the bicycle looks brand spanking new-from-the-box, then I think that weirdo original equipment authenticates it. I myself am struggling with the thought of making some very strange raleigh seat bolts in stainless :

and trying to decide to if I really need to buy newer milremo plastic handlebar plugs. I happen to have some black and white period cabling, uncut, but i won't use it because braking performance is a safety issue for me. And all my bikes are riders ...

On the other hand, if the bike has been upgraded in some areas (saddle, phil wood parts), then I think there is license to make other "period correct" upgrades that would have been common.
