New to the list.
Since 1994 I have been riding a SR Pinarello Montello bought used. Last Saturday while climbing Las Flores the left pedal (Speedplay X) started chewing its way out of the crank; had to pedal home circa 10 mi on the right leg.
Now its time to retire and restore this bike since a Mondonico has been ordered in October.
What would be the correct 170mm crank to get? The bike has a sticker commemorating "Campione del Mondo 1984" it likely built in '85 judging by catalog I've found scanned online. From what I've learned the cranks should say 170 STRADA and have a circle date code, is this correct? Does the gruppo have to have a '84-'85 date for the bike to be correct, will a circle 2, was the circle 1 crankset (not original) that is broken 'correct'? Did the shops install, say a 1982 gruppo, on a '85 bike? Are the later non fluted cranks OK on this?
I do not want a perfect restoration but do want a *correct* bike I can ride, so that the SR gruppo that came with the bike is complete.
Thanks,
Paolo Sant'Ambrogio Santa Monica, CA
