Is it really asbestos? To me, it looks more like the cords found in car tires... Of course, many cyclists used to make their brake blocks from cup-up car tires, so I always assumed Mafac replicated that. (Or course, cutting up modern steel-belted tires wouldn't work...)
For car brakes, was the asbestos used to improve braking or for its heat resistance?
Anybody got more info?
