When a guy has rims that weigh a pound each, and tries to save a few grams on
a chain, from a "how much will this affect the weight of the bike?"
standpoint, it does seem at first, a little...well...silly. That said, it may
well completely change the perception of how the machine shifts, and is
completely up to the owner of the chain. If shortening the chain beyond the
manufacturers intended limits doesn't go well, then a piece of equipment that
goes for up to $125US on ebay, may be ruined.
Every bicycle built by an enthusiast, is a piece of functional sculpture that
reflects the taste of the builder and we all have different goals in what and
how we build things. If you ask for opinions about something you are going to
build, that's just what you get, opinions. Some more practical than others,
some more aesthetic.
