Unless I'm badly mistaken, the only cleatable cycling shoes available when the Cinelli pedals were introduced were leather soled. The Puma plastic sole shoes came along around 1978 or so. I think they were the first non leather shoes. The Cinelli cleats were, like all other cleats at that time, nailed to the leather soles. Many bike shops had a shoemaker's anvil, essentially an upside-down iron foot on a pedestal for mounting cleats.
I'm not sure how you would go about making the Cinelli cleats "Look Compatible". ;-)

Mine are on nearly worn-out old-style Addidas, no point in messing up a pair
of shoes for something that gets ridden only on Sundays at Cirque...
