Well, BMX riders have rediscovered the 'old school' type of hard shell helmets: <http://www.danscomp.com/cgi-bin/hazel.cgi?action=DETAIL&item=602026>. I don't know how comfortable these are...
It's also been pointed out the the cheapest (under $60) of the major brands (Bell, Giro, etc.) tend to be the least radically shaped and colored helmets available.
