About those crudely squashed stay ends you mention. The ones I remember are on '60's Steyr/Puch bicycles such as my mid-'60's Puch "Bergmeister". I'm sure there were others as well, but that's the one I am familiar with. And I wouldn't even consider it to be similar to those on a Masi.
I have a Miyata 912 that has fluted stay ends as well, but although cleanly executed, the contours are definitely different than those on my Masi.
