masi didn't use a pre-fabbed plug unti the Prestiges were intro'd in 75 or so. the previous 20(?) years the tops were "handmade" by mitering the stay and brazing a like-shaped plate in the area. the 3V's were intro'd in 81 and the same seatstay piece was used on these models.
and, you ask: "Wasn't masi really trying to make frame building easier and faster?" they were a production shop. you cannot fault them for seeking efficiency. e-RICHIE chester, ct

internal lug design to eliminate the need for mitre cuts? Aren't these
cool looking dropouts designed to eliminate mitre cuts? Sure speeds up
the
building process when you don't have to do fish mouth mitre cuts and be
perfect with your brazing and filing. Wasn't masi really trying to make
