Wow - so many replys and ideas - thank you all. I ended up making a makeshift tool with a bolt, nut and appropriate washers all used to hold my cheap park tool in place. Then gave it a medium bonk with a plastic covered dead blow hammer and out they came. One was all rusty inside and the other had some film on the threads. Yes - I eas turning them the correct way, but thank you all for pointing that out just in case! I'll be buying a tool for future removals as I love tools as much as bikes.
