Hi Bruce,
Saw your post on the CR list regarding the Superiors. I'm a lurker there who just reads the archives and I don't know how to respond "on list".
Anyway, the '62 and '63 15 speed Superiors had the same large unthreaded bottom bracket for the Ashtabula crank that the other Schwinns (except for the Paramount) had. The Super Sport was introduced in '64 and was basically the successor to the Superior. Schwinn went to step and a half (sometimes called Alpine) gearing that year which gave as low a gear as the 15 speeds had so the Huret 40/47/52 chainset was dropped in favor of a Sprint 39/50 chainset. The '76 Superior which was the successor the Sports Tourer did have the smaller threaded bottom bracket for a three piece cotterless crank. I can't speak to the thirties/forties vintage Superiors. Haven't ever seen one in person. I have a '62 though.
