Jonathan Greene and I visited a fellow classics lover, Steve Sparks, today in Orange Springs FL. There was no mistaking the correct house in a very rural area of north central Florida near Ocala and Gainesville. The two lugged steel frames mounted on the fence posts that mark his driveway were a dead giveaway. Steve isn't a CR listmember, but he should be. He has 8-10 lugged steel bikes (Colnago, Serotta, Daccordi, Paramount, Lemond, Masi GC, Derosa, plus). But, it was his workshop that grabbed our attention. Jonathan was way ahead of me in finding the VAR bike stand, then the VAR wheel truing stand, and these two prizes: Serial Number 003 Henry James alignment fixture and the complete Campagnolo tool kit including French cutting tools!!! He certainly has a lot of stuff. We had a nice ride with Steve and his friend Chuck. We rode about 25 miles, including 10 miles on some very rough chip seal pavement that was about as close as we will get in Florida to duplicating the Paris-Roubaix cobblestones (anxious to watch it tomorrow on OLN). We were chased by dogs and we chased a few ourselves. Jonathan saw the carcass of a dead alligator as he raced Steve and Chuck to the top of a very steep bridge (I begged out of the 'climb'. Man, was this ever fun. Afterward, we had breakfast at a very quaint local cafe with great spiced sausage. The cafe was particularly Southern, complete with deer heads and largemouth bass on the walls and that wasn't the most interesting fauna we saw, but all we can talk about on list--you'll have to ask Jonathan at Cirque. I picked up a nice John Howard by Dave Moulton from Steve so there was another reason for the trip, but it is always fun to visit folks who can share their love of bicycles in a nice relaxing setting.
