I'm a mechanic and think like one when it comes to small stuff; lined
housing, "rolled" cables where the outermost wires have been flattened, and
Kool-Stop brake pads are enhancements that vintage Mafacs deserve to bring
out their full functioning potential. Mine work best with the Jagwire cable
housing that is compressionless and has a carbon-like appearance. Vintage
modification: The late, revered Spence Wolf who founded Cupertino Bike Shop
in California used to sell the original brake arch stiffener bars with Mafac
Competition brakes in the 1970's, he also offered a stainless-cable upgrade
with sets he sold. Also consider the number of French and Japanese high-end
bike makers who braze Mafac posts onto frames directly and chuck the backing
plate--to me it's well within the spirit of the thing to modify Mafac sets!
