Here is some additional data received from Tufo on using their 28 mm D28 cross tyre on the road. It looks like it can work fairly well. However additional research indicates that the side wall is much more red than brown. Not so good for the "classic look". Still, I might try a pair, as they will take up to 120 psi, and the diamond tread reminds me of the old Clement special 66.

However the really interesting item is the possible 25mm HICC Tufo tubie. Designed for tandems, it might be a real option, given Tufo's rep for round, tough tires. The regular HICC is 22 mm, takes 125 psi, weighs 260 grams, sells for around $43 and has a nice tan sidewall. Lets just hope they don't make the new one yellow!
