I think the heavier cables give a more solid feel to the brakes. It helps if the housings are lined, assuming the cable passes freely through. Loose Screws used to sell Weinmann tandem brake cables that were heavier than typical cables and they seem as good as Campy. I think they've long sold out of these. I'm not as certain about the derailleur cables.
