Not much too add on the rim discussion, but the current model Mavic I/O (5 spoke carbon) has a "for Track Use Only" warning.

On period track wheels I would make sure that the spokes are tied and soldered--some people still do this even on modern equipment.

I think the high/low flange debate, was a sprint/endurance (sprinters ride high/pursuiter ride low) thing, but I'd have to check my copy of CONI to be certain. Some of those old hubs are still in use today--Shaun Wallace still races on a set of Campy Record hubs from the fifties.

If anyone has a 24h rear track hub I would be interested in it.
