Hi Dale-
I want to offer my congratulations for putting on a fantastic event this past weekend. I particularly want to thank you for bringing Jeff Groman to the Cirque so I could pick his brain in person about the golden era of 6-day racing in the NY/NJ area. I don't know if I've told you this before but a great-great?(not sure how many generations back) uncle on my mother's side of the family was a six-day pro who lived in Newark and raced in Madison Square Garden in the 1890s. I brought a newspaper article with me from 1918 where my relative John Gillen was invited to the Newark velodrome for an old timer's race and I was curious if Jeff had any knowlege of him. Off the top of his head he hadn't heard of him but he offered to search through his archives and memorabilia for any mention of John Gillen. I spoke with Jeff briefly on Saturday and quite extensively on Sunday and his enthusiasm, knowlege, and passion was truly infectious. For some time I've been meaning to get motivated to conduct my own research through the newspaper microfilm records at Duke University and I've been inspired. Jeff urged me to keep in email contact and I look forward to continued communication with him. I have a brother-in-law who lives in Seattle so hopefully in the next year or so I'll be able to swing by and visit Jeff in person at his shop/museum while visiting family in the area.
Thanks Dale!!
Regards, Peter Hymas >>
