Well, my bike only waits at stoplights. The rest of the time I keep it moving as fast as I can! ;-)

What my bikes weigh on the other hand, is a whole 'nother matter. I confess to being one of those who is fascinated by the quest of building rather light daily riders. My trail bike, loaded and ready to roll, goes out right at 23 pounds. My lightest full-up roadbike, goes right around 17 pounds with a water bottle. I think if I'd go back to DT shifters, I could approach 16 pounds, but I'm reluctant to ride in a pack with DT's. Curiously enough, my fastest climbing bike isn't the lightest, it's the stiffest and that requires some beef. That said, the climber sports Tufo shod Fiammes. Ditto, the track bikes. Gotta watch that rotating mass.

BTW, I had the bejeezus scared out of me descending on the light bike last March in Texas. I was heading down loooong hill that I usually take at 50 -55 mph, and a 30 mph headwind had that bike in an epileptic siezure. Even Brian would have chalked up another episode of cheating the Reaper. Next year, I'm going back to my Merckx with a steel fork for predictable downhill behavior.

Amen to your post!!

My Bianchi Trofeo in its bulletproof no messing around condition for any type roads you can dish out with tools and waterbottles rates in around 27 pounds or more. Weight is one thing for racing and another for the "real world"

> How much does your bike really weight? E. Sloane says my PX-10 weights 21 lbs. My commuter PX-10 with fenders, front and rear racks, 2 water bottle cages, tail light, airfree tires, etc. actually weights 27 lbs. My PX-10 trailer queen with Tufo tubulars, one water bottle, spare, pump, etc. actually weights 25 lbs. My point? Put your "ready to ride" bike on a scale and it will probably weight more than you think. Daniel S. SwordsNew Orleans, LA
