I think that the criterion should be hardware that exhibits elegant, classic design, which is only loosely tied to dates. So, I suggest a soft cutoff date of around the mid 80s, with the real criterion being style, not time. That would allow for, say, a mid-80s DeRosa, but would still rule out Look pedals, even though they technically were around by then.
I suppose it's true that someday even beer-can Cannondales may be viewed as "classics." If so, I'm comforted by the fact that, by then, I might well be dead.
