Ann asked if square tapered axles were the norm. Some Classic exceptions:
Williams AB77 had a tapered spline. Lambert had a square and no taper (hiss). TA had an arrangement like this (> with a cotterlike device.
I have seen triangular tapered too, that goes way back.
