Not all road forks have the same crown race diameter. The most common today is 26.4mm. The next most common is 27.0mm. If the '73 had 27.0 and the '61 had 26.4, what you observed makes sense. I would have thought it was more likely the older bike would have had the 27.0mm, but you never know.
