Yeah, that's why I started bringing a spoke wrench with me on rides about 30 years ago... you wouldn't believe how handy that little chingadera can be ;)
The reality is that a broken spoke is no different with horizontal or vertical dropouts; either way the spokes need to be adjusted to compensate for a broken spoke.
